AZ Awards 2020 Gradient Background.
The 10th anniversary of the annual AZ Awards: a celebration of the world’s best in Architecture and Design, hosted by AZURE Magazine.
Building on the 2019 identity refresh, the AZURE team was looking for a unique way to capture this milestone in their 2020 identity and show graphics. We responded with a logo and system refresh that sparkles.

AZ Awards 2020 Logo process
The 2020 AZ AWARDS logo builds upon the foundations of the 2019 brand elements. In place of the horizontal line, this refresh incorporates the gravitas of the 10th anniversary of the AZ Awards.

Web ads integrate the animated logo followed by key messaging and full bleed images. Headings use a combination of bold and light weights, stacked and tracked to equal the width of the longest word or phrase, using movement that is subtle and celebratory.
The Newsletter is predominantly black and white, using the animated logo where possible to highlight the ‘10th Year’. Colour differentiates key sections and headlines use a stacked & tracked type treatment.
The 2020 Submissions Video evokes an emotional reaction. Leveraging the jury interviews from previous years, architect Thom Mayne of Morphosis. shares a thoughtful, sincere, and memorable response to why awards matter.
Following the advanced marketing, the visual system is expanded across all facets for the Gala branding to develop the show graphics. Like all things in 2020, the process and programming were disrupted by the global pandemic. The in-person gala was recalibrated to the first ever all digital experience. We developed an adaptive graphic system that responds to any platform.
Watch the entire Award Show.
Eight colours were selected to represent each gala category providing energy and contrast to the featured work and backgrounds. Tiempos Light was introduced as a headline for contrast.
The Fun Zone: A flexible area surrounding the core video content that adapts to any platform requirements. Using the AZ logo to mask a colour gradient (made using all of the category colours) as a super graphic, reinforces the gala’s bright and energetic tone without distracting from the core content.
